Beccles and District Museum has running a project to research World War One, the people who served in the war and the effect that it had on the town and surrounding area. The starting point was a collection of newspaper cuttings collected by the the Town's Mayor at the time and the 'Roll of Honour' published in 1920. If you follow the link below you will be able to explore the data that we have collected and begin to see how the Great War affected people of the time.
This project is still on going and we would welcome additional material to add to that which we have currently collected. So if your family was one that lived in Beccles or the surrounding area and you have photographs, diaries or information that you would like to share with us then please contact the museum.
Initially the focus was on the men, and women, that served in the forces but we have added a lot of material that looks at life back at home, from the food situation, to the controls that were placed on the civilian population and how the town was organised and managed during the war period and shortly afterwards.
